Algeria Wildfires Kill 12 and Injure 54 Amid Severe Heatwave

Algiers (HT): At least 12 people have been killed and 54 others injured as wildfires spread through northeastern Algeria during a severe heatwave.

The deaths were recorded in the provinces of Jijel, Bejaia and Tizi Ouzou. Six injured people were reported to be in critical condition.

Civil Protection teams recorded 154 separate fire outbreaks across Algeria in one day. Dozens of families were evacuated as emergency teams worked to control the flames.

Extreme heat, drought and strong winds have increased the danger of seasonal wildfires along Algeria’s Mediterranean coastline.
