NAIROBI (HT): Kenya’s prolonged nurses’ strike is increasing pressure on public hospitals, with essential services disrupted in several parts of the country.
Hundreds of nurses have demonstrated in Nairobi, demanding payment of salary arrears and allowances, additional staffing, promotions and improved career progression. Their union says important provisions of a collective bargaining agreement signed in 2017 remain unimplemented.
The national government and county authorities have continued negotiations with union representatives, including discussions over permanent employment for workers recruited under the Universal Health Coverage programme.
Nurses say they will remain on strike until signed agreements are honoured, warning that persistent staff shortages and difficult working conditions are affecting the safety and quality of patient care.
