NAIROBI (HT): Former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta has stepped aside from the leadership of the Jubilee Party and asked members to support former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i as his successor.
Kenyatta said he would remain a Jubilee member and serve in a senior advisory role. Matiang’i has already received the party’s endorsement as a potential presidential candidate in Kenya’s 2027 general election.
The transition follows a High Court ruling restricting former presidents from continuing to hold formal political-party leadership positions more than six months after leaving office.
However, the succession may still face an internal contest. Jubilee Deputy Leader Jeremiah Kioni has said the next party leader should be selected through the organisation’s democratic procedures.
