NAIROBI (HT): Kenya has confirmed an eighth Ebola infection as health authorities work to contain transmission linked to the country’s first recorded patient.
Director-General for Health Patrick Amoth said one of 38 people tested on Sunday was positive. The latest patient is a 49-year-old attendant who cleaned utensils and linen and was probably exposed while working around Kenya’s first case.
That initial patient had travelled from the Democratic Republic of Congo and died in Nairobi on October 5. Three healthcare workers and one relative of the deceased were among four additional cases announced on Saturday.
The Bundibugyo strain responsible for the outbreak has no approved vaccine or specific treatment. AllAfrica previously reported that the crisis was exposing persistent weaknesses in African health financing, including heavy reliance on declining external assistance.
