Dar es Salaam (HT): Tanzania’s Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi has announced that he will resign from office and retire from politics and public service.
Nchimbi said his resignation would take effect on September 4. He explained that he had informed President Samia Suluhu Hassan of his decision and believed the president wanted a change in the vice presidency.
The announcement came approximately one month after Nchimbi publicly called on Tanzanians to campaign for a new constitution based on national consensus.
Tanzania’s constitutional reform process began under former President Jakaya Kikwete in 2011 but stalled before a referendum could be conducted.
