Somalia Moves Closer to Implementing African Free Trade Agreement

Mogadishu (HT): Somalia is moving forward with plans to implement the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agreement following talks between the Federal Government and AfCFTA leadership.

Commerce and Industry Minister Jamal Mohamed Hassan held discussions in Mogadishu with AfCFTA Secretary-General Wamkele Mene on moving Somalia from ratification to implementation.

President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud approved the agreement on July 31 following parliamentary ratification.

The government says joining the continental trading system could provide Somali businesses with greater access to a market of more than 1.4 billion people.

Somalia also hopes to use its strategic location, coastline and ports to increase exports, create jobs and strengthen its position as a regional trade hub.
