SANA’A (HT): Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi forces have exchanged attacks as fighting intensifies around the strategic Bab al-Mandeb waterway.
Houthi forces captured Mocha and Mayun Island after advancing along Yemen’s Red Sea coast. Government forces responded with air strikes targeting Houthi personnel, weapons and vehicles near Mocha.
The International Organization for Migration said nearly 46,000 people had been displaced since the latest fighting began. Humanitarian access has also become more difficult following the capture of Mocha.
Bab al-Mandeb connects the Red Sea with the Gulf of Aden. Continued instability could seriously affect shipping, food supplies and fuel prices in Somalia and across the Horn of Africa.
