Mogadishu (HT): Nearly six million people in Somalia—almost one-third of the population—are facing acute food insecurity, according to the United Nations World Food Programme.
Drought, conflict, climate shocks and rising food prices have placed millions of families at risk. Nearly two million children under five are expected to suffer acute malnutrition this year, including around 500,000 requiring urgent treatment.
Aid agencies reportedly have only about 10 percent of the resources available during Somalia’s 2022 drought response, forcing the WFP to reduce assistance.
UK Minister for Africa Kirsty McNeill was also briefed in Mogadishu about a credible risk of famine developing in five areas by late 2026.
