Bujumbura (HT): Burundi is preparing to join the East African Payment System by December 2026, in a move expected to make cross-border payments easier and faster.
The system currently connects Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Rwanda, allowing participating countries to process regional payments more efficiently.
Burundi’s central bank has been modernizing its payment infrastructure and introduced its national instant payment system, Burundi Pay, in March.
Joining the regional network is expected to support trade between Burundi and other East African countries and reduce dependence on foreign currencies for some regional transactions.
The development is part of wider efforts to strengthen economic integration within the East African Community.
