Witnesses Report Eritrean Troops Inside Northern Ethiopia as Tensions Rise

ADIGRAT, ETHIOPIA (HT): Witnesses have reported seeing Eritrean soldiers travelling through the northern Ethiopian town of Adigrat, days after Ethiopia and Eritrea severed diplomatic relations.

Two residents told Reuters that dozens of soldiers wearing uniforms they identified as Eritrean drove through the town in two trucks. Adigrat is approximately 25 kilometres south of the Eritrean border.

Reuters could not independently verify the accounts. Gebreigziabher Beyene, commander of the Ethiopian government-aligned Tigray Peace Force, separately claimed Eritrean troops had entered Tigray with heavy weapons.

Eritrea’s information minister accused Ethiopia of constructing a false self-defence narrative to justify aggression but did not directly address whether Eritrean soldiers had crossed the border. If independently confirmed, their presence would significantly increase the danger of Ethiopia’s renewed northern war becoming a wider regional conflict.
