Mogadishu (HT): Somalia’s first modern deepwater exploration well has reached approximately 1,300 metres below the seabed—about one-third of its planned drilling depth.

Somali Petroleum Authority Director-General Abdulkadir Adan said it remains too early to determine whether the Curad-1 well contains commercially recoverable oil or gas.

The Turkish Petroleum Corporation is drilling the well using the Çağrı Bey drillship. The site is located around 372 kilometres northeast of Mogadishu in water approximately 3,500 metres deep.

Officials expect drilling to finish by the end of September, approximately one month ahead of schedule. The Petroleum Authority said operations were proceeding without accidents.
