Two UN Peacekeepers Killed in South Sudan Ambush

JUBA (HT): Two United Nations peacekeepers were killed and three others wounded when armed men ambushed a patrol travelling towards Pajut in South Sudan’s Jonglei State.

Two South Sudanese police officers and two civilian employees attached to the UN mission were also injured. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan deployed a rapid-response force to secure the area and assist those affected.

The attack comes amid growing concern that South Sudan could return to full-scale civil war as fighting intensifies between government forces and troops loyal to detained opposition leader Riek Machar.

UN figures indicate that more than 450 attacks against humanitarian personnel and assets were recorded between January and July 2026. At least 36 humanitarian workers and contractors were killed during the same period. Source: Al Jazeera/AP
