Mogadishu (HT) The Federal Republic of Somalia and the Republic of Sudan have signed a mutual visa exemption agreement for holders of diplomatic passports, marking a concrete step toward strengthening bilateral relations and facilitating closer diplomatic engagement between the two countries.
The agreement was concluded at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mogadishu during the second session of the Somalia–Sudan Political Consultation Committee, co-chaired by H.E. Mr. Hamza Adan Haadow, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Somalia, and H.E. Ambassador Muawiya Osman Khalid, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sudan, with the participation of senior officials from both sides.
The session focused on advancing cooperation across key sectors, including political coordination, economic partnership, education, and human capacity development. Both sides agreed to reactivate and strengthen joint cooperation mechanisms, with a view to translating longstanding relations into more structured and results-driven engagement.
Underscoring the depth of historical and strategic ties between the two brotherly nations, the discussions also addressed regional and international developments of mutual interest. Both sides reaffirmed their commitment to sustained coordination in addressing shared challenges and contributing to peace and stability across the Arab and African regions.
The signing of the visa exemption agreement stands out as a key outcome of the session, expected to ease diplomatic mobility, enhance official exchanges, and support more frequent high-level engagement between the two Ministries.
This engagement reflects Somalia’s continued efforts to expand its diplomatic footprint, strengthen partnerships across the Arab and African regions, and position itself as an active and constructive player in regional cooperation frameworks.
Both sides agreed to maintain regular consultations and build on the outcomes of this session to further deepen bilateral cooperation in the period ahead.
